The Asbury Revival and Habakkuk 1

The President of the student body was interviewed recently by Fox News about what’s happening at Asbury College. She said that a scripture being shared among those attending is Habakkuk chapter 1, specifically Hab 1:5.

Habakkuk 1:5

The Lord’s Surprising Answer
“Look at the nations and pay attention!
You will be shocked and amazed!
For I will do something in your lifetime
that you will not believe even though you are forewarned.

I believe this young lady may think this Word describes what God is doing among them but it means something very different.

Hab 1:5-11 is the Lord’s response to the prophet’s observations about the culture of injustice and violence around him, the conduct of the wicked towards the innocent. This passage is a declaration of judgement in the form of military conquest, the army of Babylon used as an instrument of judgement against the wicked. Uh-oh…is the Lord once again decreeing judgement upon the wicked of our own time? The description of the culture in Habakkuk is strikingly similar to that of our own culture in this country.

Could this event at Asbury College be a final warning from the God of Heaven to America? It is interesting that the Lord chose the heart of the nation geographically to expose the heart of the nation spiritually.

Asbury began with a call from Romans 12 to understand the love of God through Christ and extend it by the Spirit of God to others as described in Romans 12. But apparently the message of the love of God is tempered by a warning of the judgement of God.

I hope the prayer of Habakkuk is once again made known:

O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid:
O LORD, revive thy work in the midst of the years,
in the midst of the years make known;
in wrath remember mercy.

Habakkuk 3:1-2

God bless the young people of Asbury College as they seek His face. May the glory of the Lord once again be made known to all the nations and all the rulers. May the gospel of Jesus Christ go out to every corner of this world to bring his salvation to many.
