AI Threat to the Church

This may sound a little dystopian but it’s serious. AI is advancing so fast that it’s possible there is already Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in existence but hidden. Some AI companies have started using AI to improve AI. This is a strong positive feedback loop that will possibly soon overrun human understanding and control. The only thing holding AI back is the lack of power. AI may have already solved that problem.

Please take the time to view the video about the direction and implications of AI. It’s secular, not Christian, but from people who know.

YouTube about AI

Robotics technologies and AI agents are already replacing jobs by the thousands. Within 6 months they will dominate any job with routine tasks.

The federal government is reducing government workforce by tens of thousands. Will the public see degraded services? Maybe in the short term but the goal is government by AI.

What about the church? What are the implications? I thought of a few:

  • Significant job loss in your congregations will reduce giving required to keep the church operating budget solvent.
  • Reduced giving will force difficult choices about the future.
  • More people may require living assistance.
  • Your people will begin to rely on AI to do Bible studies.
  • Pastors will have AI build sermons.
  • Churches will use AI agents for administrative tasks.

There will be many more unintended consequences.

My recommendations:

1. Get your elders and some of your mature believers from various walks of life and brainstorm what the possible impacts are and what steps you need to take now to prepare your church and protect your people.

2. Pray.

For biblical reasons there are likely lines you may be unwilling to cross in adapting to the new world we are about to enter. Make policy within the church that prevents increased incursion of AI in the operations and ministry of the church. Inform your people what’s happening and what to expect, as well as how the church will respond.

God is in control; he can restrain AI; it will never get beyond what He permits. On that we can rely, but we are not relieved of the responsibility to stay alert and make ourselves aware of the schemes of the devil.
