There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him. Revelation 22:3
The study of these final chapters in the Book of Revelation is overwhelming. There is so much richness here. This particular verse carries three key characteristics of God’s kingdom and the Holy City:
- There will no longer be any curse
- The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it
- His bond servants will serve Him
Each of these deserves a separate, in depth post so I will focus on the second aspect of this verse – the throne of God and of the Lamb. This topic itself is an expansive one the could have an entire book written about it.
There are many aspects described about the throne of God in its setting in heaven and then in the Holy City. Many artists have tried to capture a multidimensional description of the throne in the scripture (even though we are not supposed to do that) in a two dimensional image. I considered including one in this post but decided against it. Perhaps the reason God prohibits making such images (Exodus 20:4), aside from it becoming idolatry, is that we cannot capture the majesty and magnitude of its glory. How can one make a finite picture of the infinite. The best we can do is accept the prophetic description as a small glimpse that the Lord allows.
The throne of God is mentioned more times in the Book of Revelation than in any other book. It is described in detail Revelation 4, Isaiah 6, Psalms, Ezekiel 1. Currently, the throne of God is in heaven (Psalm 11:4, 103:19, Rev 4:2).
However, the day will come in the fulness of God’s kingdom when the throne of the Almighty will be relocated from heaven to the earth. When the Holy City comes down from heaven and is established on the earth, the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the great city (Rev 22:3).
The throne of God and of the Lamb are mentioned together in the context of the Holy City. This particular wording is unique to the Book of Revelation and occurs after the final judgements and coincident with the Holy City coming down from heaven. Messiah is clearly in the center of the throne of God even now but in the events prior to the new heavens and the new earth, messiah is very engaged personally.
Revelation is the book of messiah. He is no longer the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22:1-18. Soon, as prophesied by John, he returns as King of kings and Lord of lords. He may have sat down at the right hand of God but he will soon be standing up and mounting the white horse to wage war as conquering king. Make sure you are on the right side of prophecy!
A throne represents the kingdom, power, authority, sovereignty, dominion of the person who sits upon it. As the Psalm says:
The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psalms 103:19
There are, at this point in history other thrones that represent other spiritual entities that occupy them – and they are real and powerful. The Bible mentions the throne of the evil one which shall be given to the beast (Antichrist). The time of Antichrist is coming soon. But the fate of every rebellious, evil entity is already sealed. As prophesied by Isaiah:
But you are brought down to Sheol, to the far reaches of the pit. Isaiah 14:15
As prophesied in Revelation by John:
…the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. Revelation 20:10
The throne of the evil one will not prevail. As it says in Ephesians:
…He [God the father] raised Him [Christ] from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. Ephesians 1:20-21
It is the throne of the Almighty and of the Lamb that shall remain forever:
- But the LORD sits enthroned forever…Psalms 9:7
- Your throne, O God, is forever and ever…Psalms 45:6
- But you, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures to all generations…Lamentations 5:19
There are many other places in scripture that relate this truth. For those who reject God, be reminded: his kingdom is coming and will not be stopped. He has given us the answers in his Word and his Word has demonstrated time and time again that it is true. God’s track record in delivering on what he has spoken through the prophets is 100%. So if you are looking for a reason to believe the Bible, then believe on the basis of God’s reliability in prophecy.
So, in summary, the throne of God and of the Lamb is far above all other authority whether it be rulers on the earth, spiritual entities in the heavenly realm, any other spiritual entity wherever they may be. The throne of God and of the Lamb is so far above them that it is unreachable. And the throne of God represents his sovereignty, power, and authority. It shall remain forever. All other kingdoms shall be pulverized into dust and remembered no more.
If you are in Christ, saved by his grace through your repentance and faith in the gospel of salvation, here is something amazing. Christ is seated at the right hand of his father, the Almighty, the creator, the one who made the heavens and the earth. And there you are seated with him (positionally) in that same place (Eph 2:4-7). Spiritual forces of darkness cannot touch you. That is the power and authority of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
Next, a description of the appearance of the throne, the temple, and him who sits on the throne.
